The parish seat is located in Edgard and the largest city in the parish is located in LaPlace, with a population of nearly 30,000 citizens. St. John the Baptist Parish was the second permanent settlement in Louisiana, established in the early 1700’s, and was part of land known as the “German Coast” in the late-18th and early-19th centuries, named after the many German migrants who lived in the area.
