St. John the Baptist Parish

Bisected by the Mississippi River in the southeast region of Louisiana, St. John the Baptist Parish was founded in 1807 and is home to over 44,000 residents. The parish seat is located in Edgard and the largest city in the parish is located in LaPlace, with a population of nearly 30,000 citizens. St. John the Baptist Parish was the second permanent settlement in Louisiana, established in the early 1700’s, and was part of land known as the “German Coast” in the late-18th and early-19th centuries, named after the many German migrants who lived in the area. The Garyville Timbermill Museum presents a detailed look at the rich Creole history of St. John the Baptist Parish. Home to many traditional Louisiana plantation homes, Evergreen Plantation, Whitney Plantation Historic District, and San Francisco Plantation House each call St. John the Baptist Parish home.
