Avoyelles Parish

Avoyelles Parish is home to over 41,000 residents and its parish seat located in the city of Marksville, which is partly within Native American Reservation land. The parish was founded in 1807 and named by French colonists for the historic Avoyel Native American Indians, a Natchez-speaking tribe who inhabited the area at the time. Avoyelles Parish is known most for its rich “Cajun” culture, which is exemplified by the food and architecture found throughout the area. The parish is home to the Lake Ophelia National Wildlife Refuge and the Grand Cote National Wildlife Refuge. Some of the many popular locations in Avoyelles Parish include the Marksville State Historical Site and the Simmesport Fishing Museum. Avoyelles Parish is neighbors to La Salle and Catahoula Parish to the north and St. Landry Parish to the south.
