Drunk Driving Accidents (Punitive Damages)
In Louisiana, drunk drivers cause catastrophic accidents that often result in serious injury or death. Louisiana has special laws designed to compensate victims and punish intoxicated motorists (including drivers impaired by alcohol and/or drugs).
These special laws allow for recovery of exemplary or punitive damages against drunk drivers. Punitive damages are awarded in excess of compensatory damages (compensatory damages include medical expenses, lost earnings and damages for pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, etc.).
Broussard & David has the resources and experience to make intoxicated motorists and their insurers pay for the damages they cause and pay punitive damages. In fact, in 2007, Broussard & David was successful in obtaining the highest punitive damage award in the state of Louisiana against an intoxicated truck driver. In that case, experts were enlisted to prove that the truck driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident, and a Lafayette Parish jury awarded $15,000,000.00 in punitive damages.
